Desert Island Top 10 #3

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:56 pm by emilygrrrice

I love kids. They always make me smile, and they are fantastic, tiny people. Most of ‘em, anyway. I have spent a lot of time around kids my whole life, and I am never less than amazed by the things that come out of their mouths (and I don’t mean spit up). Here is my list of the top ten questions that have been asked of me by small children. They always make me smile.

10) “What does f!@# mean?” (Ummm, different things, at different times.)

9) “How do those stupid scientists know that dinosaurs were ugly colors like brown and green? I think they were pink!” (You are probably right.)

8) “Do you think that tiger would eat me if he could?” (Yes. I think he would.)

7) “Would you like to get married to me a buy a baby?” (No thanks. You really don’t know how this works, do you?)

6) “Would you sit by me a cuddle me, but not tell anybody about it, because I am a big boy?” (Absolutely.)

5) “Is that guy (Will Ferrell) retarded, or am I allowed to make fun of him?” (My response was…hysterical laughter.)

4) “Would you like to build a train with me and sail it to Mexico?” (Yes. Yes, I would love that. thanks.)

3) “Emily, how do I know if I pooped my pants, or just farted?” (….)

2) “What is your favorite kind of flower? You know, to eat?” (….do I need to call poison control?)

1) “If Jesus is the son of God, who did God have sex with?” (You should probably ask your Sunday school teacher.)

I miss little. If any of you have young children that would possibly ask ridiculous questions, can I borrow them for a bit? Please?

I am a terrible pet mother

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:32 am by emilygrrrice

So it was pointed out to me that I blogged to introduce you all to our new kitten, yet I have never introduced you to our first born/adopted pet. So without further ado…

This is TessieBell Grice. We call her Tessie though. She was adopted from the SPCA in March of 2006, so that she could protect me while Kyle is away. She doesn’t. She licks people and sits on them whenever they sit on the couch. She is red with some white on her feet and chest and the very tip of her tail. Also, she likes to have the remote to herself. She can also talk. You should come pet her. She would like that. BTW…Tessie and Olly are not the best of friends. Yet.

Olly! This is my new kitten. His technical name is Ollivander Phillip Charlemagne Caplin Grice VII. He is very fluffy and gray and cute. If anybody would like to come pet him, let me know and we can arrange it.

Desert Island Top Ten #2

Posted in John Cusack at 2:12 pm by emilygrrrice

Here is my desert island list of top ten eleven John Cusack movie ever:

11. Pushing Tin (Never trust air traffic controllers)

10. Serendipity (It’s lame. I love it.)

9. The Martian Child (John Cusack as a Daddy? Fantastic.)

8. Must Love Dogs (I do!)

7. Better Off Dead (I can’t believe that I forgot to put this on here. I love Lane.)

6. Max (This is stupendous. It involves Hitler as an artist and John Cusack.)

5. Being John Malkovich (A guy playing with puppets never looked so hot.)

4. Con Air (Hello! Do I even need to explain this? No? Good.)

3. Grosse Pointe Blank (I am convinced that this movie is actually real, because you can’t make this stuff up!)

2. High Fidelity (Where this idea came from. You. Should. Watch. This. Movie.)

1. Say Anything (…IN YOUR EYES….THE LIGHT,THE HEAT…IN YOUR EYES I AM COMPLETE….)

That’s it. I sort of have a weird crush on John Cusack, in case you can’t tell. If there is anybody out there who has seen all of these movie, we should form some sort of support group.

I had to change my mind. This is now a top eleven list. I forgot Better Off Dead. Thanks for catching that Travis.

A Challenge, Emily?

Posted in God, Harry Potter at 4:55 pm by emilygrrrice

Yep. That’s right. More about it in a moment.

Wanna know a dirty little secret about me? No? Then stop reading. Here it goes: I do NOT like reading the Bible.

It’s terrible, I know. I love to read. I will read just about anything, quicker than lightening. I have read a 6,000,000 page book in 7 hours (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). I pretty much will devour any and every book around. But when it comes to reading the Bible, I do not enjoy it at all. I have to sit down and force myself to do it. It is laborious and tiring and I often end up mad by the time I am done. I know why, too.

Growing up, all throughout school, when we were supposed to read a book for class, I would hate it and refuse to do it. Nobody understood. My parents and teachers knew I could do it, if I wanted too, I just wouldn’t. Yet a few months later, I would pick up the book and read it and love it. Very confusing, especially as a parent or teacher, right? I did it because I didn’t want to read a book because I HAD to. I wanted to choose my own lessons that I wanted to learn from reading the book. Now, even years later, I am the same way. I know I am supposed to read the Bible. I know I should read the Bible. I know I should be learning Jesus’ lessons/plans/story through the Bible. And that is exactly the reason I don’t like to.

So here is my challenge to myself. I am gonna take it easy, and no longer to force myself to read a specific section or a specific amount of the Bible everyday at a certain time. We got a new Bible that is very easy to read. So for the next 30 days, I am challenging myself to read the Bible everyday, whenever in the day I want, whatever part I want, however much I want. I am gonna keep a journal about it (in writing, not blog) and see if I can learn and absorb more, but I will definitely let you know how it is going.

Here’s the thing guys. Hold me accountable. When you see me, ask me about what I have been reading. Shun me if I tell you I haven’t done anything (kidding). Just hold me accountable.

Wish me luck!

Desert Island Top 10 #1

Posted in Uncategorized tagged , , at 7:11 pm by emilygrrrice

So there is this book I like called High Fidelity. In this book, the main character has an obsession with making Desert Island Top Ten lists. You know, like “Top Ten books I would want with me if I was stranded on a desert island.” That kinda thing. I have read this book eight times, and so now I have a sort of obsession with it too. So this is something I am gonna do every Monday, a new lists. Let’s start out with a very obvious one first.

In no particular order….

Desert Island Top Ten Favorite Bands (Right Now)

-The Rolling Stone. Will. Always. Be. On. Every. Great. Musical. List. I. Make.

-Say Anything. My favorite little known band ever. I sing loudly to all of their songs.

-Less Than Jake. Usually can cheer me up from a bad mood. You can’t be grumpy when there are both horns and silly, yet meaningful lyrics.

-Jimmy Eat World. They got soul. They got guitars. They got awesome songs. And it is taking a lot of self restraint to not put “have” in between “they” and “got”, just for the sake of being cool.

-Kanye West. Because even if he is sort of a jerk sometimes, I love him. And somehow, I can’t live without rap.

-Jay-Z. Because he is simply awesome. And again, because I need some ghetto on my desert island.

-Elton John. Classic piano. Wonderful songs. How could I not bring him along?

-Garth Brooks. Just need some country, and if you are gonna bring it, why not bring the best? Maybe the country can battle the rap for my entertainment.

-Tom Petty. Even if he is a bit creepy looking, he is still way awesome, and I have loved his since the age of six.

-Jonas Brothers. Kidding. Eric Clapton. He can play the guitar better than anyone (I think). If I bring him along, I get not only his stuff, but Cream as well. So it is a bonus. Plus, he is a Jesus loving guitar man, so he could probably sing me some awesome Christian stuff.

Here are some sidenotes. I would be bringing the artists, rather than just a collection of their music. Also, I have noticed that I would be the only female on this island. Women, Asians, and Hispanics are way under represented. Also, I had to look up how to spell “desert”. I can never remember desert vs. dessert. Ok, that’s all for now.

Gimme your desert island top ten, please.

M.I.G.U.W.T.T.M.S.A.L. #4

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:10 am by emilygrrrice

Sorry I missed last week. I just forgot, honestly.

Anyway, this week, I was all set to write about one particular song that is amazing. I had notes written in y little notebook thing I carry around and everything. However, I went to visit my friends Ginny and Eric today to play with a little baby, and I didn’t end up coming home until like, 6:45. As we were driving home on the Parkway, I happened to stop talking long enough to look out the window in silence for a moment. I was greeted with the most beautiful sunset sky I have ever seen before. It was just this perfect, post rain mixture of orange and pink and blue, and it took my breath away. What made it even better was the fact that it wasn’t over some glorious beach or some picturesque mountain. It was over the concrete road and metal signs of the Polk Parkway in Lakeland. Honesty, one of the last places I expected to see something so beautiful.

Upon seeing this, a song came to mind. It’s by this fantastic band called Less Than Jake, one of the bands responsible for my husband and I meeting, and I love them. The song is called “Is This Thing On?”. Listen to it if you get a chance. Here is the lyric:

Can we really measure if we’re any better

Than that skyline that goes on and on forever on and on

Here’s the thing. Sometimes, I feel very very small and unimportant. That’s a natural way to feel. In fact, in the grand scheme of things, we are very small. I was looking at that sky and thinking, ” Wow God, awesome job with that sunset today. Really top notch.” Then I realized that the same God that made that sunset also made me. And it left me breathless that somebody that took the time to create something so beautiful also took the time to create me. That sunset and I are the same. Every beautiful thing on this earth is the same as me and the same as you. We were made by the same creator. Many people probably saw that sunset tonight and thought it was awesome and thanked God, and it was only in the sky for a few minutes. I have been on the earth for 24 years, and probably will be for many more (let us hope). I hope somebody has looked at me, thought I was awesome, and thanked God for me (I mean besides my Mom and husband). Seeing this sunset, thinking of this song, made me so proud of my creator. So I just wanna take a moment to say, Bravo God. Bravo.

Has anything made you stop lately to give God a round of applause?

So have you heard?

About this “Big Bang” machine they have made underground to do sciency stuff? What do you think? I was just reading about it, and I, for one, am really not sure that this is a good idea. Yeah, I am all for science and I am sure that we will learn loads of valuable information from this particle accelerator/collider. But here are some issues I have with it:

1) Spending 4 billion dollars to build this thing when billions of people in the world are starving? Seriously?

2) If you want to learn more about the universe, try prayer. Or reading the Bible. I have recently come to understand and believe that God is behind everything. Every tiny particle in the Universe, and there is no way you are ever gonna understand it without him.

3) Apparently some people think it will cause “mini-black holes” and destroy Earth, the Sun, the moon, ect. Who knows if this could happen, but it sounds pretty terrifying to me. When you are faced with a choice to build something that might cause the solar system to be sucked into nothingness or not build it, the choice seems a no-brainer to me. Let’s try to shoot for no black holes, guys.

4) It is run/worked on by some guys who are huge d-bags. I was reading an qoute by one of them, somebody who is notably anti-religion, saying that they are going to “prove to everybody, once and for all, that the universe was started by the Big Bang”. Really? Is that what you’re gonna do? Run all the little tests you want, I doubt that it will make much of a difference how I or anybody else views God. Look, I don’t know if the Big Bang actually happened and formed the universe. But I know that if that is how it worked, God was behind it.

So I know how the people who built it feel about it. I know how I feel about it. I know how Dan Brown feels about it. I just wonder how God feels about this. What does he think of people trying to replicate his work? Trying to prove he doesn’t exist? Trying to catch him in a pickle? I wonder if he laughs at us or if he gets furious. I wonder if any of these scientists considered God before making this machine. I wonder if any of these scientists believe in God at all.

That’s another thing. Can you be a scientist, a pure scientist, and still be a Christian? Can you believe both in CERN and the Bible? I don’t know. I love science. I love space and dinosaurs and biology and the pure, true laws that govern physics. But I love God above all. Does that make me an oddity? Jack and Locke fight over this often, so at least I know I am not the only one.

What do you think?

So it seems…

Posted in Kyle, Tessie, work tagged , , , at 4:12 pm by emilygrrrice

…like it has been awhile since I posted. I have been incredibly busy, mixed with a little bit of incredibly unmotivated. Here are some things though.

A) I have the most amazing friends in the world. For our birthday, Kyle and I got to celebrate with many of our closest friends, and I feel so loved by them. I am truly blessed to have them.

6) Something amazing is happening at church. Stay tuned.

- My husband made me a library area for my birthday. I have always wanted a “library” or reading room, and now I have one. So all of you who commented with reccomendations on my books post, I will be borrowing them very soon!

*** I am having a chocolate frenzy. I have a Kit Kat bar hidden away in my desk. I am trying to resist.

~ I love having a job, even if I do not love the job I have. I love being able to bring home money for my little family and putting some away in savings and just being able to do stuff sometimes. That being said, I am still looking for a better job, that I love doing.

P.S. I have the best dog in the world. Her name is Tessie. I will post a picture of her.

That’s pretty much it.

What is it with me and books?

Posted in Harry Potter, Kyle, Tessie, birthday, books at 1:02 pm by emilygrrrice

SO! Today is my birthday. And Kyle’s birthday. And our dog Tessie’s birthday. That’s besides the point. Yesterday we went out to celebrate with outr friends Emily, Mike, Ginny, Eric, Emma, and Scottie. I was gonna link you to the blogs of the people that have them, but I can’t figure out how. Anyway, It was our birthday, and we were told we could do whatever we wanted for fun. AWESOME! So what did we do? We had an awesome dinner at GrillSmith. And then….wait for it….we went to the book store to shop for books!!!! Seriously, Emily? Yes. Seriously.

So I love books. But I am on a dry spell recently. I am currently reading the Harry Potter series…for the EIGHTH time. Well, and the Bible. I read that everyday also. Anyway, I need some ideas. So, because it’s my birthday and all, you should give me the gift of telling me about your favorite book. Tell me about some books that have inspired you, changed your life, ect. It could be fiction, non-fiction, biography, comic book, anything! And also, if you want to let me borrow them, that would be cheap cool.

I am very excited!
